Installation

Thanks to a wonderfully designed installer, the installation of Uniblue’s Registry Booster was fairly simple and effortless. So simple, in fact, that even the most novice computer user would find Uniblue’s Registry Booster easy to install compared to most other software.

Additionally, as the Registry Booster, the Best Registry Cleaner, is less than 10MB is size, the installation was extremely fast. The next tab is “Restore” which is very helpful. Everytime the software cleans the registry, it prompts you to either make a full or partial registry backup, in case things don’t go so well. If something does go wrong, you can come to this tab and select the last backup you had and click “Restore” and you’ll be back to that registry.

The last tab is called “Settings”, which is where you can customize when Registry Booster runs and if it scans automatically, etc. You can also find the “Ignore List” where you can tell the program to skip any of registry files you specify. The last section to the “Settings” tab is “Log Details”, which is where a log is kept of everything you’ve done in the program itself.

Scanning, Defragmenting, Repairing, and Backing-Up my Windows Registry

Scanning: Uniblue’s Registry Booster comes packaged with a highly sophisticated scanning engine that peruses one’s registry in both a thorough and quick manner. I was surprised at how quickly the utility scanned my entire registry, and shocked to see that it had reported a total of 150 registry errors.

Was there a difference? From the Task manager you can immediately notice that a lot of process have been killed (these were probably slowing down the system and are not really necessary). You can also notice that the memory usage have decreased considerably.

Another thing that you cannot notice and I dont think I can demonstrate in this article is the improvement in speed. My PC was running much faster that it did before. I feel the last time it ran this fast was when it was brand new. Told ya, I just love Registry Booster

We decided to test both RegCure and Registry Easy, and make our findings publicly available in this in-depth review. Read on to discover which Registry Repair program is best for you, before you part with your hard-earned cash.

What hardware and OS we used to test the above programs

We did our tests on a nice modern laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad T61, with an Intel® Core(TM)2 Duo 2.60GHz CPU. However, this machine had been running with Windows Vista Ultimate for over a year at the time of testing, and was getting as slow as molasses due to hundreds of Registry errors. A perfect testing environment for a Registry Cleaner to prove its worth!

Which one scans the Registry deep enough to uncover all problems?

Both RegCure or Registry Easy have a deep auto-scan mode. This mode is used by default. In auto-scan mode, both programs scan your Registry for every known problem, and display the scan results in an easy-to-understand way. We ran both programs in automatic mode to see which one does a better job at finding all the Registry problems on this laptop.

Here’s the results: RegCure found 849 errors, and Registry Easy found 867. An impressive number that certainly explains the sluggish laptop’s performance. No big difference between the two programs, however, Registry Easy did score a little better.

Which Registry Cleaner is faster to complete the scan?

Another thing you should keep in mind when choosing the best Registry Cleaner is speed of operation. You don’t want to sit there all day watching the software at work, do you? So we timed the auto-scan speed of both RegCure and Registry Easy, and here’s the test results.

RegCure turns out to be blazingly fast. For roughly the same number of errors, it completed the scan in a little under two minutes, while Registry Easy took a full three minutes to complete the process. In this test, RegCure certainly wins. For many people, though, a one minute difference is no big deal.

Which of the two fixes Registry errors better?

Now this one was a bit tough. As crucial as this test was, at first we couldn’t think of a way to test the success rate at which each program repairs Registry errors. After all, if one of them fixed all errors, what would be left for the other to fix?

However, the solution turned out to be simple: As both programs include a full Registry backup capability, we backed up our Registry first, ran Registry Easy, told it to fix all errors, noted the result, restored the Registry to the “before” state, then ran RegCure, and compared.

Here’s the results: Out of 867 errors that Registry Easy found, it managed to fix them all, scoring a perfect 100% in fixing invalid entries. RegCure, however, needs a bit of improvement in this department. Out of 849 errors it identified, it managed to fix 827, demonstrating a 97% success ratio in repairing registry problems. To be fair, though, on a second take RegCure did fix the remaining 22 errors.

So which one is actually better?

This is largely a matter of personal preference. However, Registry Easy did score a little better in our tests. Plus, Registry Easy offers a nice History Sweeper option which cleans your Registry of all PC activity records, protecting your privacy. RegCure doesn’t offer a similar feature, however, its speed may be more important to some users.

We will continue to test both RegCure Registry Optimizer and Registry Easy in different configurations, and publish the results, so that users can make an informed decision when choosing the best Registry Cleaner.

With the increase in spyware infections online, the common question you hear is, “how do I protect my computer from spyware and adware?” Many are so desperate that they will do anything just to find and kill spyware from their computers.

Having experienced some infection sometime ago and knowing the trouble I went through searching online for information on “how to protect my computer from spyware and adware problems” and finally finding a way round this problem I’ve put this article together to help others who are experiencing this problem.

But first, what really is Spyware?

When I was faced with the problem the first thing I did, before thinking of seeking a way to find and kill the spyware or even asking, “how do I protect my computer from spyware and adware”, was to seek and understand what spyware and adware really are. And this is what I found out:

Adware: Software that is installed into your computer without proper notification or permission and alters your browser and/or security settings, with the aim of displaying advertising without actually monitoring the user.

Spyware: Any program that gets into your computer without permission and hides in the background while it makes unwanted changes to your user experience with the aim of monitoring your computer activities surreptitiously and transmits that information over the internet.

Besides, I learnt that Spyware is generally not designed to damage your computer. The damage it does is more a by-product of its main mission, which is to serve you targeted advertisements or make your browser display certain sites or search results.

These malicious programs are designed to silently bypass firewalls and anti-virus software without the user’s knowledge. This is why in most cases it is not easy to find and kill spyware with anti-virus software. Fortunately however, unlike viruses and worms, spyware programs do not usually self-replicate. But once embedded in a computer, a spyware can wreak havoc on the system’s performance while gathering your personal information.

So where do spyware come from?

To my chagrin I discovered that I, like many people asking how do I protect my computer from spyware, was somehow responsible for allowing spyware into my computer. Most times this comes from downloading Freeware programs.

You may not know it but by downloading a freeware advert-supported program, you’ve allowed spyware or adware into your PC!

Typically, spyware originates in three ways. These are:

1. The first and most common way is when the user installs it, like the example above. In this scenario, spyware is embedded, attached, or bundled with a freeware or shareware program without the user’s knowledge. Once downloaded, the spyware program goes to work collecting data for the spyware author’s personal use or to sell to a third-party.

2. Another way that spyware can access your computer is by tricking you into manipulating the security features designed to prevent any unwanted installations. For example, a pop-up modeled after a standard Windows dialog box, may appear on your screen. The message may ask you if you would like to optimize your internet access. It provides yes or no answer buttons, but, no matter which button you push, a download containing the spyware program will commence.

3. Finally, some spyware applications infect a system by attacking security holes in the Web browser or other software. When the user navigates a webpage controlled by a spyware author, the page contains code designed to attack the browser, and force the installation of the spyware program.

You may be wondering now, how can I protect my computer from spyware considering all these? The truth is there are a couple things you can do to prevent spyware from infecting your computer system.

a. First, invest in a reliable commercial anti-spyware program. There are several currently on the market including stand alone software packages. Other options provide the anti-spyware software as part of an anti-virus package. Anti-spyware programs can combat spyware by providing real-time protection, scanning, and removal of any found spyware software.

b. The Internet Explorer (IE) is often a contributor to the spyware problem because spyware programs like to attach themselves to its functionality. Spyware enjoys penetrating the IE’s weaknesses. Because of this, many users have switched to non-IE browsers. However, if you prefer to stick with Internet Explorer, be sure to update the security patches regularly, and only download programs from reputable sources. This will help reduce your chances of a spyware infiltration.

c. Beware of many P2P file-sharing programs. They are notorious for downloads that possess spyware programs. The user of a downloadable program should pay extra attention to the accompanying licensing agreement. Often the software publisher will warn the user that a spyware program will be installed along with the requested program. Unfortunately, we do not always take the time to read the fine print. Some agreements may provide special “opt-out” boxes that the user can click to stop the spyware from being included in the download. Be sure to review the document before signing off on the download.

But if all these fails?

Finally, if your computer has been infected with a large number of spyware programs, the only solution you may have is backing up your data, and performing a complete reinstall of the operating system.
